Dr. Curt D. Sigmund Honored with Presidential Outstanding Service Award from the American Physiological Society

Milwaukee, April 5, 2024 – The 91ɫƵ (91ɫƵ) is pleased to announce that Curt D. Sigmund, PhD, FAPS, the James J. Smith & Catherine Welsch Smith chair of Physiology, chair of the Department of Physiology, and associate director of the Cardiovascular Center, was recently honored with the 2024 Presidential Outstanding Service Award from the .

This award recognizes an APS member for extended and outstanding volunteer service to the Society and APS community. Dr. Sigmund was selected from a pool of nominees by current APS President, Willis K. “Rick” Samson, PhD, DSc, FAPS.

Dr. Sigmund’s service to APS started in 1994 as an associate editor for the American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Sigmund went on to become editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrated and Comparative Physiology and, later, chair of the Publications Committee. He has also chaired the Joint Program Committee and served as an elected member of APS Council. Dr. Sigmund’s service to the physiological community extends internationally, including as a past chair of the International Union of Physiological Sciences Genomics Commission.

“I am thrilled that Dr. Sigmund has been named the recipient of the 2024 Presidential Outstanding Service Award from the American Physiological Society,” said Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, provost and executive vice president of 91ɫƵ and The Julia A. Uihlein, MA, Dean of the School of Medicine. “This prestigious recognition is a testament to his unwavering dedication to APS and commitment to serving the broader scientific community. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated and impactful individual as Dr. Sigmund as a leader of the 91ɫƵ family, and I am confident his contributions will continue to inspire many for years to come.”

Dr. Sigmund was honored during the Opening Session at the American Physiology Summit on April 4, 2024.
