Biography
Lisa Sanchez-Johnsen, PhD, MS, is a Professor in the Institute for Health and Equity, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, and Departments of Surgery and Family and Community Medicine at the 91ɫƵ. She is also the Associate Cancer Center Director for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging in the 91ɫƵ Cancer Center and an 91ɫƵ Cancer Center Research Scholar Endowed Chair. Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen is the Director of the LANI Research Program (Latino, Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander) and the Multicultural Health, Obesity, and Cancer Health Equity Research Scholars Program, which are research, mentorship, and training programs for those interested in health equity research on a national basis. In addition, she is also a Clinical Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen is the former Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at Rush University Medical Center, and the former Director of the Bariatric Surgery Research Program and the Multicultural and Latinx Health Equity Research Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She previously held faculty positions at The University of Chicago and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen is a Board Member of the Hawaii Psychological Association, where she is also the elected Diversity Representative and Chair of the Diversity and Equity Steering Committee. In addition, Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen is a Board Member and Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer in the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii. Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen is also the Founder and Owner of a clinical psychology and consulting practice called Multicultural Health and Wellness, PLLC (DBA: Hawaii Hispanic Latino Health and Wellness and Hawaii Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Consulting). She is a licensed clinical psychologist in Hawaii, Illinois, and Wisconsin and she specializes in behavioral medicine, obesity, and culture-based physical and behavioral health interventions for diverse groups. Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen is a PI on an NIH-funded telehealth intervention focused on obesity in Latino men, a Co-I on the All of Us Wisconsin Research Program, the Director of Behavioral Health, Wellness, and Resiliency for the HRSA-funded Hispanic Center of Excellence at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a former PI on a study focused on cultural variables underlying obesity in Filipinos.
Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen is the Founder/Past Chair of the Multicultural and Ethnic Minority Health Special Interest Group in the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Founder/Past Chair of the Latinx Health Equity and Health Disparities Special Interest Group in the National Latinx Psychological Association. She is also a Fellow in the Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity and Race and a Fellow in the Society for Health Psychology in the American Psychological Association, which are honors bestowed upon members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen has received numerous awards and honors for her professional accomplishments. These honors have included the Distinguished Professional Early Career Award from the National Latino Psychological Association (2008), as well as the Presidential Citation for Latino Leadership from the American Psychological Association (2005). Most recently, Dr. Sanchez-Johnsen received the Distinguished Professional Career Award from the National Latinx Psychological Association (2022) and in 2024, she received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.
