Biography

Dr. Kevin D. Walter joined the department in 2007 after three years in private practice. He completed a Sports Medicine fellowship with Akron Children’s Hospital in 2004. He served as Pediatric Chief Resident at from 2001 to 2002, following completion of his Pediatric residency with the 91ɫƵ in 2001. He is board certified in Pediatrics and Sports Medicine.

Dr. Walter graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1993. He was awarded the Chick Evans Scholarship for his undergraduate education. He attended medical school at the from 1994 to 1998. Dr. Walter has been named as a “Top Doctor” by numerous organizations: Milwaukee Magazine, MKE Lifestyle, Brava magazine, M magazine, and Parent’s Choice. He has received numerous awards from the American Academy of Pediatrics and 91ɫƵ for teaching and advocacy.

Dr. Walter is the Associate Professor and Medical Director of Pediatric and Adolescent Sports Medicine and the Medical Director of Sports Rehabilitation at Children’s Wisconsin. He is the co-founder of the multidisciplinary Concussion Clinic. He currently practices at Children’s Wisconsin Greenfield and Mequon Clinics. He is the chair of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, and member since 2006, where he has helped to create guidelines for the safe participation of Wisconsin’s high school athletes. He served a 4-year term on the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, returning to work on subsequent projects. He also served on the National Academy of Sciences’ Committee and Work Group on Sports Concussion in Youth.

He is a fellow of the and an active member of the Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. Dr. Walter was elected to serve 6 years on the COSMF Executive Committee, where he planned the educational sessions for the Annual Meeting. He is also the vice-chair of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. Given his roles, Dr. Walter frequently works on advocacy issues at the local, state, and national level to improve wellness and safety for young athletes, notably working on concussion, sudden death, and pre-participation evaluation legislation.

Dr. Walter has published articles and given many local to international presentations on a variety of sports medicine topics. He was a co-author on "Sport-related Concussion in Children and Adolescents" published in Pediatrics in 2010 and 2018 revision. He was a co-editor of the book, Pediatric Handbook of Concussion. He is also involved with community and coach education.

He has provided medical coverage for a wide range of events and has been a team physician for several high schools and colleges. Dr. Walter currently is the lead Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant for the Green Bay Packers. He is a team physician for Waukesha South High School and the Milwaukee Public School District.

Research Interests

Dr. Walter’s clinical interests include sports injuries in the young athlete, concussion, and back pain in the adolescent athlete. He also has a special interest in behavioral health in young athletes, and injury prevention and sport specialization/the culture of youth sports.
