91ɫƵ Pediatric Residency PL1 Year

The PL1 year consists of a variety of inpatient and ambulatory experiences which promote the development of independent patient care skills, the accumulation of medical knowledge, enhancement of communication skills and professionalism, improvement in supervisory and teaching skills, the capacity to work in interdisciplinary teams, and the gradual development of a level of confidence, skills, knowledge, and comfort that will allow the resident to progress to the more supervisory stages of their training.

Orientation
  • Introduction and teaching of specific skills
  • Introduction to the services of Children’s Wisconsin
  • Opportunity to meet your peers and get acquainted with the hospital and Milwaukee
  • Instruction in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and the Neonatal Resuscitation Program
  • Meetings with potential faculty advisors
  • Time to develop individual learning plans
Ambulatory Care Clinic
  • You will learn about non-emergent acute illnesses and preventive health care for newborns through adolescents.
  • You will provide care at the Midtown Clinic-Children's Wisconsin, an academic general pediatric practice in urban Milwaukee.
Adolescent Medicine
  • Medicine Residents provide outpatient care to adolescents at multiple sites, including Midtown Clinic- Children's Wisconsin, Children's Wisconsin Adolescent Clinic and the Juvenile Detention Center.
  • Residents learn to evaluate and manage a wide variety of problems commonly seen in adolescent patients including sexually transmitted infections, eating disorders, substance abuse and mental health concerns. 
Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics
  • An ambulatory rotation devoted to childhood development, behavioral pediatrics, and psychiatry.
  • Residents spend one week each at an elementary school and at a day care center engaging and observing children of different ages and different developmental levels.
  • Residents receive instruction on children with special health care needs, including a home visit with a child and their family and instruction regarding home medical equipment.
  • Residents receive instruction in psychopharmacology, developmental assessments, ADHD, autism and developmental delay.
Mental and Behavioral Health
  • Provides an opportunity to participate in and observe the mental health care of children and adolescents within our health care system and in Southeast Wisconsin.
  • Residents will engage in a variety of inpatient and outpatient experiences to more fully appreciate the breadth of services and resources that families and patients must navigate to achieve better mental health and overall health.
  • During this rotation, residents will be learning from mental and behavioral health experts including but not limited to the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and primary care with a variety of training backgrounds.
  • There will also be asynchronous modular electronic learning resources available on the rotation.
Electives

Our program offers a wide variety of elective opportunities that allow residents to explore specific interests in pediatrics while working with experts in their respective pediatric subspecialties. We also encourage interested residents to utilize elective time to pursue opportunities in research, medical education, advocacy, and global/community health. We also allow for residents to develop new electives with approval from the Program Director.

Emergency Department
  • You will receive instruction and experience in acute childhood illnesses, including trauma, infectious illnesses, and life-threatening emergencies.
  • You will function as the primary care provider for assigned patients.
  • Multiple opportunities for procedures, including suturing, intravenous line placement, lumbar puncture and reduction of dislocations.
General Pediatric and Subspecialty Wards

Ward Teams with a combination of:

  • General Ward Teams that provide care to hospital medicine patients.
  • Subspecialty Ward Teams that provide care to patients on the following services: Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Hematology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Endocrinology, Genetics
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • You will receive instruction and experience in the care of the critically ill neonate, including premature infants, infants with congenital heart disease, and infants with surgical conditions.
  • You will have multiple opportunities to learn procedure such as intubation and umbilical line placement and attend deliveries.
  • You will be supported by Senior Residents, Fellows and Neonatology Faculty while in the Unit.
Community Pediatrics and Advocacy Training
  • Residents learn about community pediatrics and child advocacy, including the role of community, regional and national organizations, and strategies for advocacy at all levels.
  • Residents work longitudinally, in collaboration with community organizations, on projects carried out by fellow members of their residency class.
  • Opportunities exist for residents to continue their community activities beyond the scheduled experience.
  • Many residents have presented their projects at local, regional, and national meetings.
Newborn Nursery
  • You will learn about the care of the normal newborn, acute care in the delivery room, and newborns with mild medical illness not requiring intensive care.
  • You will be supervised by a General Pediatrician Faculty member.
