Adolescent Medicine
- PL2 residents provide outpatient care to adolescents at multiple sites, including the Midtown Clinic-Children's Wisconsin, the Children's Wisconsin Adolescent Clinic and the Juvenile Detention Center.
- Residents learn to evaluate and manage a wide variety of problems commonly seen in adolescent patients including sexually transmitted infections, eating disorders, substance abuse and mental health concerns
Community Pediatrics and Advocacy Training
- Residents learn about community pediatrics and child advocacy, including the role of community, regional and national organizations and strategies for advocacy at all levels.
- Residents work longitudinally, in collaboration with community organizations, on projects carried out by fellow members of their residency class.
- Opportunities exist for residents to continue their community activities beyond the scheduled 4-week experience.
- Many residents have presented their projects at local, regional, and national meetings.
Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics
- An ambulatory rotation devoted to childhood development, behavioral pediatrics, and psychiatry.
- Residents spend one week each at an elementary school and at a day care center engaging and observing children of different ages and different developmental levels.
- Residents receive instruction on children with special health care needs, including a home visit with a child and their family and instruction regarding home medical equipment.
- Residents receive instruction in psychopharmacology, developmental assessments, ADHD, autism and developmental delay.
Elective
Our program offers a wide variety of elective opportunities that allow residents to explore specific interests in pediatrics while working with experts in their respective pediatric subspecialties. We also encourage interested residents to utilize elective time to pursue opportunities in research, medical education, advocacy, and global/community health. We also allow for residents to develop new electives with approval from the Program Director.
Emergency Department
- You will receive instruction and experience in acute childhood illnesses, including trauma, infectious illnesses, and life-threatening emergencies. You will function as the primary care provider for assigned patients. Multiple opportunities for procedures, including suturing, intravenous line placement, lumbar puncture and reduction of dislocations.
Hematology Oncology Transplant Unit
- Residents provide care to patients on a 24-bed unit dedicated to Hematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant.
- Residents are responsible for a maximum of eight (8) patients at a time.
Mental and Behavioral Health
- Provides an opportunity to participate in and observe the mental health care of children and adolescents within our health care system and in Southeast Wisconsin.
- Residents will engage in a variety of inpatient and outpatient experiences to more fully appreciate the breadth of services and resources that families and patients must navigate to achieve better mental health and overall health.
- During this rotation, residents will be learning from mental and behavioral health experts including but not limited to the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and primary care with a variety of training backgrounds.
- There will also be a synchronous modular electronic learning resources available on the rotation.
Night Shift
- A primarily supervisory in-patient experience, with opportunities to develop teaching and supervisory skills.
- Consists of overnight shifts over a 4-week period of Residents will help PL1s to care for in-patients overnight, including new admissions.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Residents receive instruction and experience caring for children of all ages with a wide variety of life-threatening conditions.
