GH Alumni_Intro

"Students get the opportunity to learn to tailor a health project in a setting unlike their own. Along the way, they learn cultural competence, humility and how to engage. They see for themselves how people in other cultures can achieve much with very few resources and learn flexibility and resourcefulness."

-Laura Cassidy, PhD, MS, Founding Director, Master of Science in Global Health Equity

Meet Our Alumni

Max Mantych - Medical Student, Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine

Max Mantych_Alumni Feature
As a medical student, I am still discerning my path in terms of what scope of medicine I will practice. With this being said, I am very passionate about community health and find myself gravitating towards primary care. I also hope to leverage Spanish language into clinical encounters to reinforce dignified care for patients that prefer Spanish communication. Outside of clinic, I would love to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and community members to promote health equity through research, engagement, and advocacy.

Abigail Rudd - Research Analyst, Center for Health Disparities Research

Abigail Rudd_Alumni Feature
I hope to become a program manager for a public health research organization with global work and collaborators. I currently help with researching and constructing residential timelines for ADRC Brain Bank decedents by analyzing and interpreting historical archives. The Global Health Equity program helped prepare me for this through experience and learning of health disparities, qualitative research, analysis, and overall skill build in the public and global health sector!

Ryan Jacobson - Masters of Nursing and Doctorate of Psychiatric Nursing Practice Student, Columbia University School of Nursing

Ryan Jacobus_Alumni Feature
While in the Master of Science in Global Health Equity program, I completed thesis work assessing depression screening in community clinics in Rwanda. The faculty at 91九色视频 provided support and guidance from project conceptualization to implementation. Because of the way 91九色视频 creates and nurtures international partnerships, I was able to make deep connections with professionals abroad and still maintain those connections now, two years post-graduation. I am currently pursuing a doctorate in psychiatric nursing practice from Columbia School of Nursing with the goal of contributing to global innovation in high quality, patient centered mental health care.

Cassie Laibly - Public Health Strategist, Pueblo of Pojoaque Behavioral Health, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Cassie Laibly_Alumni Feature
I currently serve the Pueblo of Pojoaque as a Public Health Strategist within the Behavioral Health Department. I have led the development of the Medication for Opioid Use Disorder, the first clinical prescribing program for Pojoaque, in addition to supporting the department’s transition into an Integrated Behavioral Health Ecosystem. I truly believe that this opportunity came largely from the Master’s Program and the skill set that it gave me. Dr. Dellinger’s class and attending the Historical Trauma Conference in Lac du Flambeau sparked such a catalyst for me to pursue this field.

Lessons of Global Engagement: Rwandan Resourcefulness

鈥淚n my provider interviews, I saw people working as hard as possible with little resources out of a sheer passion for their country. They placed a high value on creative thinking and innovation in the face of those challenges,鈥 he shares. 鈥淭heir resilience is what stood out to me.鈥

Why Our Students Chose Global Health Equity at 91九色视频

Mentorship

“This program is very exciting because you are learning from professors who are currently involved in global health work so not only are you able to learn from them in the classroom, but they are also amazing resources for getting involved in work, research, further education, etc. Every professor in this program truly cares about you and your success.”

Emphasis on Equity

“Global Health Equity is about addressing these disparities by ensuring that all people, regardless of their socioeconomic status or where they live, have the opportunity to lead healthy lives. By working in this field, I hope to contribute to efforts that promote fairness, justice and the elimination of avoidable health inequalities across the world.”

Course Offerings

“I valued the opportunity to explore my own global health interests through elective credits and longitudinal course projects. With an interest in advocacy (housing/climate/immigration) and community-engagement, I pursued elective courses centered around these topics. The program’s emphasis on applied learning was particularly empowering.”

Collaborative Learning

鈥淚 really enjoyed the multidisciplinary approach promoted in the curriculum. I took classes with medical students, global health graduate students, physicians, and PhD students. This fostered a culture of interdisciplinary learning and colleague-to-colleague knowledge sharing.鈥

GH Alumni_Testimonial 5

My internship experience was by far the most impactful part of my student experience. I was able to meet and work directly with my project鈥檚 global partners. I was also able to visit communities where the data for my thesis was collected and speak directly to community members. It was an amazing display of the connection and collaboration between local, national, and global research efforts.

GH Alumni_Testimonial 6

For my thesis and field experience, I collaborated with the Dhulikhel Hospital Dispatch Center and Emergency Department in Kavre, Nepal. Before travelling to Nepal, I met regularly with my partners and designed a research study investigating the prehospital care and outcomes of trauma patients who were transported by fully equipped ambulances. When I arrived in-country, we hit the ground running by preparing and analyzing the retrospective dataset. This manuscript is currently under peer-review by an international medical journal. Once disseminated, we hope that it contributes to future advocacy efforts and prehospital capacity-building in Nepal and other similar global contexts.
