Hello! My name is Alec and I am originally from Seattle, Washington. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology from the University of Washington - Seattle in 2019. During my undergraduate years I participated in research through the Department of Immunology and the School of Oceanography. In these positions I was able to take on projects that developed my skills as a scientist and allowed me to pursue my interest in genetics. Following my graduation, I began working as a Research Technician in a neurobiology and behavior focused genetics lab in a nonprofit institute. In that lab I helped investigate potential genetic contributors to type 2 diabetes, their neural pathways, and the impact their differential expression has on social behavior.

During this time, I was a phone operator on a local crisis and suicide prevention hotline, Crisis Connections, providing emotional assistance and housing/financial resources to the greater Seattle area. Simultaneously, I began volunteering with the Pedaling Relief Project, a group that aimed to develop community resilience and mutual aid networks through a coordinated effort of cyclists transporting donations to local food banks, shelters, and food pantries.

Outside of work and school I like to spend my time watching funny bad movies, getting outdoors and in the trees, cycling, reading, and playing board games. I am especially thankful for my family and friends for supporting me along this journey. I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing cohort and program and can't wait for what is in store for us future genetic counselors!
