Biography
Hi! My name is Carra Eagen, and I am originally from Port Huron, MI. I graduated from the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor in 2023 with a BS in Neuroscience and a minor in Linguistics. I first discovered genetic counseling while working as a scribe for a breast surgeon during undergrad. Hearing how genetic testing results could influence treatment plans sparked my interest in genetic counseling, and I began interviewing local genetic counselors. After working as a scribe, I transitioned to research, working with liver and pancreatic cancer patients at Michigan Medicine. In college I also volunteered coordinating blood drives and as a crisis counselor on Crisis Text Line. I was active in my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, and served on the philanthropy committee for four years to help support a local domestic violence shelter.
After graduating, I worked in special education for a short time before returning to research at Corewell Health in Grand Rapids, MI. I specifically worked in pediatric neurology on clinical trials for patients with SMA and DMD. I enjoyed getting to know all my patients and their experiences taught me more about resiliency and the importance of continuing support after a diagnosis. Working with children with disabilities has become a passion of mine, and I’m looking forward to continuing this during the MSGC program and as a genetic counselor.
In my free time, you can find me watching sports highlights or catching a game (Go Blue!). I also enjoy taking spin classes and working out, cooking, and baking, playing soccer, and exploring Milwaukee. I’m grateful to be part of the 4th MSGC cohort, and I’m looking forward to experiencing all the opportunities 91ɫƵ has to offer.
