Biography
Hi! My name is Madicyn Holmgren, and I am from Roseau, Minnesota. I graduated from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in December 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I went into undergrad completely at a loss for what career path I wanted to take, but when I discovered the career of genetic counseling during my sophomore year, it was my “light bulb” moment. To prepare me for applying to graduate school, I joined the pre-genetic counseling club and volunteered with my university YMCA program. I also became a crisis counselor for Crisis Text Line.
During my “enrichment” year, I worked as a behavioral therapist at an Autism Therapy Center in Minnetonka, Minnesota. This was the most impactful experience I have ever had, and I found such a passion for helping all my clients reach their highest potential. I learned so many valuable skills, such as creative problem solving, communication, staying calm in high pressure situations, that I know will help me be a better genetic counselor. My time as a BT further confirmed to me that I wanted to pursue a career where I can be a support and resource for someone else.
In my free time, I love to bake (fun fact: I have made a wedding cake!) and cook. I also love to run, read, drink coffee, rewatch original Disney Channel movies, spend time with my family and friends, and travel. I am excited to explore the city of Milwaukee during my time here! I am so grateful for the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a genetic counselor at the 91ɫƵ!
