Alumni Spotlight: Abby Mabie, PharmD
Abby Mabie, PharmD
Staff Pharmacist, Children's Wisconsin
91ɫƵ School of Pharmacy Class of 2021
What’s your “why” for pursuing a pharmacy career?
I always had a love for science, specifically biology and chemistry, but still wanted to work with other people in an exciting environment versus being stuck in a lab. Pharmacy turned out to be a perfect mix of that for me. The thing I love the most about my career as a pharmacist is being an easily accessible resource. I love answering questions from physicians, nurses, patients and friends/family on all kinds of pharmacy-related topics!
What was interesting or exciting to you about your specific pharmacy career path?
I love telling students my interesting career path post-91ɫƵ! I had applied for residencies my last year of pharmacy school but did not end up matching with a program. I pursued a Float Pharmacist position with Walgreens and worked at over 30 locations in Southeast WI in 6 months! I then was able to work a more regular schedule at a home store location with less floating. I decided to try again for residencies the following cycle, after having some more professional experience under my belt, and I ended up matching for a PGY1 at Ascension St. Joseph in Milwaukee. It was interesting and exciting entering residency already having been a licensed pharmacist for a year, but in many ways, I used the experience to my advantage. Nearing the end of residency, I began applying for jobs and was elated to secure a Staff Pharmacist position at Children’s Wisconsin!
What are your pharmacy career aspirations?
Honestly, I am already working my dream job. I love what I do and feel so lucky to be in this position. This year I became an IPPE/APPE preceptor for 91ɫƵ and a co-preceptor for Children’s PGY1 central pharmacy rotation. I plan to continue precepting and helping shape experiences for future pharmacy students and residents.
What made you decide to pursue residency? What did you gain from it?
Throughout pharmacy school I really enjoyed my clinical rotations in hospital settings and wanted to be able to give myself a more competitive edge when applying to those positions. If I could go back, I would 100% do a residency again as it gave me additional clinical experience after school, helped me gain confidence as an individual practitioner, and allowed me to learn from wonderful preceptors.
How would you describe your experience at the 91ɫƵ School of Pharmacy?
I really enjoyed my time at 91ɫƵ. I feel like it went by incredibly fast, although it did not feel so fast at the time. I had the opportunity to have unique clinical rotations, make lifelong friends and set myself up for a successful career in pharmacy!
What’s one of the top reasons someone should choose the 91ɫƵ School of Pharmacy for their PharmD education?
The 3-year program was a huge draw to me, and it was worth it. Additionally, the direct partnerships with Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Wisconsin being right on the same campus is incredibly unique and allowed for great experiences as a student.
Describe a research opportunity or clinical rotation experience you had as an 91ɫƵ pharmacy student and what you gained from it.
I had the opportunity to complete an APPE in NICU and Women’s Health at Ascension St. Joseph during my last year of pharmacy school. I always had a specific interest in NICU and Women’s Health, but it is generally not a popular area of curriculum or rotations offered for pharmacy students. I loved every minute of that rotation and learned so much. It also gave me a great foot in the door for a year later when I matched at that hospital for PGY1. I already knew my way around the hospital and some of the preceptors there!
Do you have any advice for someone who is considering a pharmacy career but isn’t quite sure?
The best advice I can give is seek out different shadowing experiences! While I was still completing my undergraduate degree, I had the opportunity to shadow a few different pharmacists in different areas of pharmacy and I truly learned so much about the profession. There are many different avenues you can go down with a pharmacy degree that many people do not know about! Gaining experience as a pharmacy technician before or during school is also incredibly valuable.
