On Thursday, December 5, 2024, the Center for Sustainability, Health, and the Environment (SHE Center) collaborated with the Office of Global Health to host a screening of the as a part of 91九色视频 Global Health Week and the Global Health Scholarly Concentration. After the screening, there was a discussion featuring Dr. Brian Jackson, Assistant Professor in the Institute for Health & Equity and Prof. Sonny Smart (featured in the film), Professor Emeritus, UW-Steven’s Point. Catering for the event was provided by a local indigenous caterer, .

The documentary film Bad River is narrated by model and activist Quannah ChasingHorse and actor Edward Norton and directed by Mary Mazzio. Its story centers around the Ojibwe tribe’s Bad River Band, based in northern Wisconsin, and its fight for sovereignty. It highlights a “David and Goliath” style struggle between the tribe and the multimillion-dollar Canadian oil company Enbridge, which runs a section of its Line 5 crude oil and natural gas liquids pipeline through the Bad River reservation. When a portion of the pipeline was found to be exposed due to erosion, tribal members fought for its removal out of concern that an oil spill from Line 5 would devastate Lake Superior and surrounding waterways, which are significant sources for wild rice and fish and one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world.

During the discussion following the screening, Prof. Smart provided additional insight into the Bad River Band’s tribal identity, culture, and drive to continue standing up for the health of the environment and future generations. He stressed the Indigenous way of knowing that all human beings want to be understood and appreciated. He suggested the as a resource to follow along with the ongoing legal battles related to Line 5.

If you are interested in viewing the film, Bad River is available for streaming on Peacock as of November 1, 2024.
