Drs. Daisy Sahoo and Joni S. Williams Named to List of Notable Health Care Leaders by BizTimes Milwaukee

Milwaukee, Dec. 17, 2024Daisy Sahoo, PhD, dean of the 91ɫƵ (91ɫƵ) School of Graduate Studies and Women in Science endowed professor; and Joni S. Williams, MD, MPH, director of 91ɫƵ’s Center for Advancing Population Science (CAPS) and associate professor, have been named by BizTimes Milwaukee to its annual list of Notable Health Care Leaders. This list recognizes individuals whose work is having a positive impact on health and healthcare in southeast Wisconsin.

Dr. Sahoo was chosen for her transformative leadership in healthcare education and research. As head of the Sahoo Laboratory, she investigates the role of scavenger receptors in diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and obesity, driving discoveries that inform precision medicine solutions. Also passionate about uplifting the next generation of scientists, her mentorship has been life-changing for her students, with all achieving publication of their work under her guidance. Beyond the lab, Dr. Sahoo has elevated 91ɫƵ’s graduate programs, inspiring young professionals to pursue careers in healthcare and establishing 91ɫƵ as a hub for education and research excellence.

Dr. Williams was selected for her dedication to advancing health equity, including efforts to address systemic inequities in healthcare. Recently appointed director of CAPS, Dr. Williams leads a team of researchers studying the intersection of social determinants of health and disparities in health outcomes. Her own research includes the Technology-Intensified Diabetes Education Study (TIDES), which empowers African Americans to better manage type 2 diabetes while highlighting the impact of structural racism, like redlining, on health. Her contributions to improving health outcomes among socially disadvantaged, historically marginalized, and medically underserved populations through community-driven research solidifies her standing as a leader in health equity.
